This case study explores the functions of the hypothalamus and the role it plays in maintaining homeostasis. Throughout this website you will learn about common symptoms and disorders relating to a disease of the hypothalamus. Using your knowledge as a Biology 30 student, you will be able to diagnose a patient based on the following scenario:
Symptom Scenario:
Janet, a middle aged woman, has been experiencing strange symptoms lately. Although she leads a busy life, working and taking care of 6 kids with her husband, lately she has been feeling extremely tired and weak and has noticed her hands and face are quite puffy and dry. Janet begins to think she may be catching the flu and doesn’t think much of it. When Janet notices she has put on some weight, she hits the gym but finds her self feeling even more exhausted after just a quick workout. Janet’s husband convinces her to go to the doctor, who notices a small lump at the front of her throat. As her doctors appointment continues, blood test show some abnormalities in the levels of some hormones, such as TSH and thyroxin, in her body. What could be causing the change in hormone levels in Janet's body?
